Hiking routes.

THE COLOURED MOUNTAIN – “LOS AZULEJOS”

The walk is located in the southwest of Gran Canaria near the small village of Veneguera. Here we can find the island’s oldest volcanic and geological landscape, including the impressive mountain range “Los Azulejos” (“The Tiles”), which surprises hikers for their unusual colour caused by minerals in the rock. During this walk we will explore forgotten paths that connect to past centuries, partially overgrown with cactuses, Canary Island sage, euphorbia plants and other indigenous flora.

The panoramic views and rock formations along this walk are impressive.

Length: 6 km o 8,5 km
Duration of walk: +/- 2,5 hours o 4 hours
Terrain type: Gravel, sometimes the terrain is uneven, concrete and dirt roads
Ascents/Descents:
Level 2 = ▲ 50m – máx 250m ▼ 400m – máx
Level 4 = ▲ 600m ▼ +/- 250m
Minimum number of participants: 4 pax

THE HIGH PEAK WALK.

On this hike we will explore the diverse vegetation of Gran Canaria and the differences between the drier climate of the south and the more humid north.

We will walk through pine forests that smell of mint, sage and broom. On clear days the panoramic views allow us to see as far as Tenerife and the Teide Peak (3730 m) and even La Gomera Island, to the west. We can also admire the mighty Roque Nublo (1813 m) and Pico de las Nieves (1949 m).

Level: 3 (medium)
Length: 8.5 – 10 km
Duration of walk: 3.5 hours – 4 hours (including picnic and breaks)
Terrain type: uneven terrain, gravel, paths through woodland covered with pine needles
Ascents/Descents: ▲ 350m – max 500m     ▼ 100m – max 400m
Minimum number of participants: 4
Multilingual guiding: Spanish, English, German, Dutch and French

ON OLD TRADE ROUTES

This walk follows paths that in past centuries were used by the island’s inhabitants for trade with neighbouring valleys. We will enjoy wonderful views over the Tirajana valley to the south-southeast and gain a deeper knowledge of the natural origins of the island. Includes public transport.

Length: 6 – 8 km
Duration of walk: 3 hours – 3.5 hours (including picnic and breaks)
Terrain type: uneven terrain, gravel, concrete and unpaved tracks
Ascents/Descents: ▲ max 400m     ▼ max 250m

EL JUNCAL – HIDDEN CAVE DWELLINGS

This walk follows the historical trail “camino real”, a peaceful route through a fragrant pine forest.

We will explore a protected area untouched by farming or hunting; here nature is pure and vibrant. We will enjoy picturesque views as we head up to the large reservoir Presa de las Niñas, to the main landmark of Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo (1813m), and to the hidden cave dwellings that make this hike a unique experience.

Length: 7.5 – 9 km
Duration of walk: 3.5 hours – 4 hours (including picnic and breaks)
Terrain type: uneven terrain, gravel, paved and unpaved tracks, paths through woodland covered with pine needles
Ascents/Descents:▲ approx. 600m     ▼ approx. 350m

JUNGLE GORGES IN THE NORTH

This walk takes us to one of the gorges with jungle-like vegetation that can be found in the north of the island. Depending on the weather conditions we will walk in the northwest or north. Here we can see how small rivers have transformed this impressive landscape over the centuries. Today water continues to flow through the gorges, forming small waterfalls all year round. We will make our way through the lush vegetation, which is surprisingly jungle-like, and marvel at the thought that we are still in Gran Canaria! The paths can be narrow and even quite steep.

Terrain type: uneven terrain, gravel and loose stones, concrete, crossing rivers (sometimes muddy)
